Audiobook Aficionado Turns Shopkeep

When he was little, iskape founder and president Steve Moore knew exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up. He wanted to own a bookstore. It just took him a while to remember himself.

After an undergraduate degree in history, a masters in Industrial Labor Relations, and a career in the automotive supply industry, a funny thing happened on the way to Indiana one day. Steve, once an avid reader who now rarely found time, decided to make the work-related commute a little more pleasurable by buying himself an audiobook. Then another. Then another. Pretty soon, he realized audiobooks were a great way to stay sharp; add a measure of pleasure to otherwise mundane routines. He also realized his audiobook habit could quickly outpace his available space -- unlike books, he could tear through a couple of stories on a long trip, which he was making three times a week. Next, to his relief, he discovered audiobook rentals!

"Then it just kind of hit me. I had always wanted to own my own business, and I love to discuss books. This seemed to be a natural fit," Moore said.

In 1997, he opened his first location in Grand Rapids, MI, followed by Kalamazoo in 1999. Steve fell in love with the business. "It was and is the most fun I've ever had working. I love the customer interaction," he says.

By 2005, his wife, Dyan, joined the business. iskape continued to grow in inventory and clientele, matching the burgeoning audiobook rental and sales industry. Today, new releases are often available the same day as the book release, and iskape prides itself on staying on the leading edge. That's because for Steve and his iskape family, audiobooks are a passion, a pastime and a vocation.

"My customers don't have to give up reading -- they don't have to compromise an active lifestyle to expand and enrich their imaginative life."
